But Sun Wai had been a solicitor for over 25 years until late 2017 when he left the well known local solicitors firm in which he had served for over 27 years with a view to joining the Bar. He was then a Partner of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department at the law firm practising criminal and civil litigation, handling matrimonial proceedings, and matters related to industrial safety, environmental protection, building management, probate and intellectual property law.

During the same period, the then solicitor Mr But was appointed member of various committees and panels in the legal field:

-Member of the Criminal Law and Procedure Committee, The Law Society of Hong Kong (2004-2017)

-Member of the Constitutional Affairs and Human Rights Committee, The Law Society of Hong Kong (2005-2017)

-Practising Solicitor Member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Panel (2011-2017)

-Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal Panel (Buildings Ordinance) (2012-2017)

-Council Member of Duty Lawyer Service (2014-2017)

-Member of the Panel of Adjudicators of the Obscene Articles Tribunal (2004-2010)

-Member of Law Reform Commission’s Sub-committees (i) on Bail (1985-1988) and (ii) on Hearsay Evidence in Criminal Proceedings (2006-2009).

Mr But strives to excel and will continue to serve in the legal field in another role now as a practising barrister.
