Hong Kong is a signatory to the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty and has reciprocal mutual legal assistance agreements with an increasing number of sovereign states.
Under this legislation Hong Kong is required to provide assistance to overseas authorities in relation to the collection of evidence in Hong Kong, while being able to make corresponding requests for information in those foreign jurisdictions.
In addition the Evidence Ordinance, Cap 8, contains provisions dealing with the obtaining of evidence in overseas jurisdictions for the purposes of criminal proceedings in Hong Kong.
